ANKLE AND FOOT PROBLEMS
Chiropractic Care For…
ANKLE AND FOOT PROBLEMS
The ankle and foot are complex structures made up of 26 bones, over 30 joints, and more than 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. With every step we take, these structures bear the full weight of the body — making them especially prone to injury, overuse, and wear and tear.
Foot and ankle pain is incredibly common — and something we see regularly at Holly Cottage Chiropractic Clinic. These problems affect people of all ages and activity levels, from athletes and gym-goers to those on their feet all day at work. In fact, issues like sprained ankles, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon problems, and foot arch pain are among the most frequent complaints we treat, especially in active individuals or those recovering from falls, repetitive strain, or poor footwear choices.
The foot and ankle are biomechanically complex, and when things go wrong, it can affect the whole body — contributing to knee, hip, or lower back pain over time. That’s why we take a full-body, functional approach to diagnosing and treating ankle and foot complaints. Whether the issue is acute (like a sprain or sports injury) or chronic (such as long-standing plantar fasciitis or joint degeneration), our team is equipped to help.
At Holly Cottage, we are proud to offer cutting-edge technology for assessing foot biomechanics. We use a high-tech foot scanning system linked to Foot Levelers®, a world-renowned provider of custom-made orthotics. This allows us to analyse pressure patterns, arch support, and gait issues in detail — and then create bespoke orthotics designed to restore balance, reduce strain, and support your unique foot structure. These orthotics can be life-changing for patients suffering with chronic foot, ankle, knee, or even lower back pain.
In addition to hands-on care, our clinic offers a range of supportive therapies to aid recovery and improve outcomes. We regularly use dry needling to release deep muscle tension and promote healing in the foot and lower leg. For inflammation and tissue healing, therapeutic ultrasound is used as part of a wider rehabilitation plan. We also apply Kinesio taping to support strained tissues and provide proprioceptive feedback during recovery from repetitive strain or sporting injuries.
Whether your pain started yesterday or has been bothering you for years, we’re here to help. Our experienced chiropractors will carry out a full assessment, explain the cause of your symptoms, and build a personalised treatment plan that supports long-term recovery, function, and performance — from the ground up.
The Causes of ANKLE & FOOT PAIN
Foot and ankle pain can stem from a variety of causes, many of which we see regularly in clinic. These issues often arise from repetitive strain, poor foot mechanics, previous injury, or improper footwear. Identifying the root cause is key to effective, lasting treatment.
STRAINS AND SPRAINS
Ankle sprains are one of the most frequent musculoskeletal injuries and occur when the ligaments around the ankle are stretched or torn — typically due to rolling or twisting the foot. Even mild sprains can lead to long-term instability if not properly rehabilitated. Symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and a feeling of weakness or giving way. Chiropractors can assist in the recovery by improving joint alignment, reducing swelling through soft tissue techniques, and guiding patients through progressive strengthening and balance exercises to prevent recurrence.
PLANTAR FASCIITIS
Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition caused by inflammation of the thick band of tissue (the plantar fascia) that runs along the sole of the foot. It commonly causes sharp, stabbing heel pain — especially with the first steps in the morning or after periods of rest. It is often linked to poor foot biomechanics, tight calves, or prolonged standing. Chiropractic care focuses on reducing tension through soft tissue techniques, improving foot and ankle mobility, and correcting contributing biomechanical imbalances through posture and gait assessment. Home exercises and footwear advice are often part of the treatment plan.
ACHILLIES TENDINOPATHY
The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel bone and plays a vital role in walking, running, and jumping. Overuse, tight calves, poor footwear, or sudden increases in activity can lead to Achilles tendinopathy — causing pain, stiffness, and thickening of the tendon. Chiropractic care may involve soft tissue therapy, eccentric loading exercises, and improving biomechanics in the foot, ankle, and even hips to reduce strain on the tendon. Early intervention leads to better outcomes.
MORTON’S NEUROMA
This condition involves irritation or thickening of the tissue around one of the nerves between the toes, most commonly between the third and fourth toes. It can cause sharp, burning pain, numbness, or a sensation like there’s a pebble in your shoe. Poor footwear, repetitive impact, or foot mechanics can contribute. While severe cases may require further medical intervention, conservative chiropractic care can help by improving foot function, reducing surrounding soft tissue tension, and advising on footwear and orthotic options.
OSTEOATHRITIS
Osteoarthritis in the ankle or foot can develop after previous injury, or simply as part of the ageing process. Common symptoms include joint stiffness, swelling, aching pain, and reduced mobility — particularly in the midfoot or big toe (hallux rigidus). Chiropractic care focuses on improving joint movement, relieving muscular compensation, and advising on lifestyle factors such as activity modification, use of orthotics and weight management. Our Clinical Dietitian may also provide nutritional support to help manage inflammation and promote joint health from the inside out.
