CLINICAL DIETITIAN
WHAT IS A CLINICAL DIETITIAN?
A Clinical Dietitian is a highly trained healthcare professional who specialises in the science of nutrition and its role in health and disease. In the UK, dietitians are the only nutrition professionals legally regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and are recognised by the NHS and private healthcare systems.
Clinical Dietitians assess, diagnose, and treat dietary and nutritional problems using the most up-to-date scientific research and medical evidence. They work with individuals to manage a wide range of health conditions — from digestive disorders, weight management, and food intolerances, to supporting joint health, hormonal balance, and chronic inflammation.
At Holly Cottage Chiropractic Clinic, our in-house Clinical Dietitian provides personalised, evidence-based nutrition plans tailored to your health needs, medical history, and lifestyle. This may involve helping to reduce pain and inflammation, support recovery from musculoskeletal conditions, or improve overall energy and wellbeing.
Dietitian vs. Nutritionist — What’s the Difference?
While both roles involve food and health, only dietitians are regulated by law and qualified to treat clinical conditions. Anyone can legally call themselves a “nutritionist” in the UK, but the title “Registered Dietitian” is protected and requires:
• A degree in dietetics or a related science
• Registration with the HCPC
• Ongoing professional development and adherence to strict clinical standards
This means that when you work with a Clinical Dietitian, you can be confident you’re receiving safe, effective, and medically sound advice.
